Feeding the Ducks - Another relatively cheap or free activity

Now that my daughter is out of school for the summer I've been spending a part of every day trying to think of different outings we can take so that noone goes crazy (ok, mostly ME) indoors. Downtown by Maymont, there are a couple of lakes/ponds that have tons of Canadian Geese in them (and some ducks). I packed up a lunch for us, made a quick stop by the Wonder Bread Outlet on Staples Mill, and went down there to feed the ducks and have a picnic lunch. The Wonder Bread Outlet sells plastic grocery bags stuffed FULL of bread (sell date is usually that day so they have to get rid of it) for $2 so I usually pick up a couple bags there to take to the park. Take your strollers if you have little kids, but the older ones will be able to run until their hearts are content up and down the hills. The ducks will come right up to you to eat. It's simple, and the kids seem to really enjoy it.

Where: William Byrd Park
Go 64E to the Boulevard Exit. Take a right at the end of the ramp. Take Boulevard until it ends at the roundabout. Go left, then past the first pond (another place you can go later this summer if they have the paddle boats out to rent) and to the right until you see the other two large ponds. Watch for the all the one way streets.

Wonder Bread Outlet
Take the Dickens Rd/Staples Mill exit. Go left at the end of the ramp. Go left at the light where the Comcast building is. Take Staples Mill until you see Ukrops on the right hand side. The WB outlet is right after that. Duck bread will be in a shopping cart in the front of the store.

Carrot Tree Kitchens in the Cole Diggs House

On the corner of read and Main St. in historic Yorktown, Virginia is the most charming little restaurant, the Carrot Tree.
I have heard about it for years and have always wanted to try it. So on our way home from the beach, Greg took me for lunch our anniversary. It was delightful. They have a varied menu and are known for there fabulous desserts. Everything is homemade and wonderful. The house was built in 1720 so it is fun to eat it it. They have lots of special lectures and programs in conjunction with lunch you can check out here:http://www.carrottreekitchens.com/

When you have visitors

Okay Ladies- Ashlee Hansen and I both have visitors this week and next and compiled a list of things to do while they were in town. Here it is with cost and some general drive time.

Monpelier: $12 for adults. James Madison's Home. About and hour-and-a-half-drive.

Petersburg battlefields- FREE. about 45 minute drive. We started at the Eastern Front Visitor Center and then took the route to the 8 point siege exhibit. Then we went to Grant's Headquarters at City point, which has Grant's cabin and The appomattox plantation in Hopewell. This is right where the appomattox and James river meet so it's pretty cool. You can find the addresses I think on NPS.GOV.

Shenandoah- $15 entrance fee per car. we drove down some scenic road, did the visitors center and a couple of hikes to the waterfalls. about a 2 hour drive. Well worth it.

Luray Caverns- $20 per person. This was super cool but Bayles was WILD and we went through in like 20 minutes when the tour is supposed to take an hour. It's a self guided tour with those headphone things. About a 2 hour drive.

The Surry to Williamsburg or Williamsburg to Surry Ferry. FREE. The ferry leaves every half hour and you just drive your car right on it then it takes you across the river. I think its about a 30 minute ferry ride. You can just google Surry ferry and find the port or whatever. It takes about an hour-and-a-half to get to Surry or about 45 minutes to Williamsburg.

Belle Isle- FREE. Right here in Richmond.

Richmond Battlefields- FREE. These are pretty cool and closer than going down to Petersburg. But I think the Petersburg ones are a little better.

George Washington Birthplace- $4. 38 miles east of Fredricksburg. Cash or check only.

Hollywood Cemetery.- FREE. Right here in Richmond.

Maymont - FREE

Monument Avenue - FREE

D.C. Zoo - FREE

Monticello- $15 per person

Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg - $28 and we are doing it for 2 days the tickets are good for 5

Route 5 Plantation Homes in Williamsburg- FREE. This is a road with a bunch of different Plantation homes.

Inner Harbor aquarium in Baltimore-Tickets I think are $15 each
